What's the most important statistic on your website? - How to write the best damn blog in the world IV

Is it how many hits? Or how many unique visitors? Is it how many click-throughs from some other online activity you're involved in or your number of subscribers - or just plain how much money you make from the damn thing? The truth is, is that the most important stat is different for all of us depending on our businesses and our business objectives.

For me, in the business of writing, the statistic I like most is 'Visit Length', the amount of time people spend on the site, reading I hope. That big green piece of the pie that you see is called 'bounce rate' - at what rate do people check in and check out so quickly that you know they weren't interested. That's 62% today. But that leaves a balance of 38% who stick around - and the part of that pie I'm most happy with is that yellow, almost 20%, part of people who stay longer that one hour. Now if you were in the business of selling something, you might like that number too, because the more time people spend on your site, the more chances you have to hit them with advertising. But I'm in the business of writing, and to do that, I need readers and even those who stay for 5 minutes are good readers. Those who stay for an hour or longer are better. Thanks all.
